Lood Viini metsadest

„Mitte ükski asi ei tekita lõpmatuse tunnet nii hästi kui rumalus,“ on autor kirjutanud näidendi motoks. Ödon von Horvathi 1931. aastal ilmunud Viini rahvatüki paroodias kõlab ikka ja jälle Johann Straussi idülliline ja muretult voogav valss „Lood Viini metsadest” – ning kõige selle taustal on inimestega toimuv kauni meloodiaga jõhkras dissonantsis. Lavastusele muusikalise kujunduse teinud lavastaja Robert Annus on asendanud Straussi valsiviisid nüüdisaegsemate armastusmeloodiatega, kuid karjuv vastuolu kestab.

The process of making this play was a nice challenge. Theater Vanemuine is the biggest theater in Estonia and the play “Tales from Vienna Woods” was made for the main stage of the theater.  A challenge, because it was the first big production for me to be the set and costume designer, aside from being a third year student in Estonian Art Academy.

One of the main themes of the play was to reflect the situation of lower -middle-class situation in Estonia which is well represented actually by an old bar in the city center of Tallinn from the 60s. A bar that has stayed the same from the day it was opened and has a wide range of different, but interesting types of clients.  The bar is called “Valli baar” and the same bar was created on the stage exactly as it is today in the middle of Tallinn Old Town.

Although throughout creating the set design for this play, the situations I faced were new for me, the work glided smoothly and I got a good idea what needs to be done to work efficiently in a big theater.

With this production, I had perfect cooperating teams in all departments, a great group of actors (+ a possibility to work with one of the golden ladies in Estonian theater, an actress Herta Elviste) and a super good understanding with the director Robert Annus. The best experience that a young scenographer could wish for:)
